New Arrival #52

MERCHANDISE - Schoolyard [Club Mix] 7”. RM20
Latest single from this Florida band who had, in my eyes, one of the very best LPs of 2010. They still have the sound of UK pop filtered through an American hardcore / noise punk sensibility, but with this remix they’ve turned more toward the New Order-esque, dance-y synth sounds, though there’s still plenty of noise and treble. No matter how you dress up this band’s stuff at the core are still brilliant songs, and I’m sure to play this one as much as the last LP. Brilliant. -Katorga Works
PAZAHORA / CRUX - Split CD. RM10
Another yet to be among the best crust band from Pacific region. And dare to say that they throw some unique crust tune from both bands. Pazahora is from Singapore and play melodic driven crust, rock out and have this similar sound with band like tragedy, or from ashes rises. It getting better and better, with more anthemic slogan and the structure became better from day to day. 5 songs overall and its sweet. While Crux deliver another 5 songs that have this strong stench feeling inside. Imagine bands like Amebix, Sacrilege or newer one sanctum, you will get the answer. Sometimes they are fast and throw some mid pace crust but all the time, they are heavy. The vocalist anna do work hard on pulling out a full expression with a lot intensity and energy while singing and all in all this is very good stuff.

New Arrival #51
From Feral Ward.

MASSHYSTERI - (2nd) Masshysteri CD. RM20
Masshysteri’s second full-length manages to be even more melodic than the first, with 10 tracks of early L.A. punk with harmonizing male/female vocals and a second guitar player this time around. These Swedes are made up of three members of the Vicious plus Sara from The (International) Noise Conspiracy and Doughnuts.

MASSHYSTERI - Var Del Av Stan CD. RM20
Comprised of 3/4 of The Vicious, including Sara of (I)NC and Doughnuts fame, Masshysteri pick up where they left off from their 7”, with a full-length worth of melodic, mid-tempo punk songs that go back to the early Los Angeles sound, mixing the early Dangerhouse style with the male/female vocal tradeoffs of X, with all lyrics delivered in Swedish.

INEPSY - No Speed Limit For Destruction CD. RM20 (SOLD OUT)
On the third full-length from Montreal’s Inepsy, the band moves further from the early Discharge influence and employ more of a straightforward rock sound, taking influences from bands like Kiss and AC/DC while retaining some of the Motorhead influence found on previous efforts.

INEPSY - City Weapons CD. RM20 (SOLD OUT)
New release from Montreal, Canada’s crust legends Inepsy. Playing exactly what you would want and expect; more of the same insane Motorhead meets D-beat rock and roll.

INEPSY - Rock N’ Roll Babylon CD. RM20 (SOLD OUT)
Gnarled and discordant hardcore in a Code 13 meets Motorhead sort of way. If you like your beers warm and jackets studded, this is required. Felix Von Havok would be proud.

WARCRY - Not So Distant Future CD. RM20 (SOLD OUT)
On their third full-length, Warcry doesn’t deviate from their formula of bulldozer-heavy, Discharge-influenced, D-beat hardcore, featuring members of his Hero Is Gone, Tragedy, Hellshock, Severed Head Of State, and Talk Is Poison.

New Arrival #48

PREYING HANDS - Through The Dark CD. RM17 / USD6
Upon returning from a European tour late in 2006, Ballast promptly broke up. 3/5th of the band would continue to play together and soon would form PREYING HANDS including new members whose previous efforts included Montreal bands Snake Master, Desperate Living and Last Days. The sound seamlessly blends an odd combination of crust, melodic hardcore and a touch of pop punk. The powerful female vocals, that lyrically combine the personal with the political, complete an intense picture. Production was handled on this debut effort by Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire, weird…) at the Pines and mastered at Mammoth Sound by Dan Randall (Limp Wrist, Government Warning). The whole thing is packaged in a beautiful three panel fold out for the CD.

New Arrival #47

BURNT CROSS - Mankind’s Obituary CD. RM20 / USD7
Two piece noisemakers Burnt Cross deliver fourteen tracks of crusty, angry punk rock with each and every track having a purpose and a message; you won’t find tracks about wishy washy nothingness, ‘Mankind’s Obituary’ is straight to the face from the guts.
Issues that shouldn’t be treated lightly get a seeing to, from the police and politicians to racism and animal rights. If you were ever into a bit of Conflict, Crass and the other Class War bands then this is something you’ll be all over like a rash. Whilst the duo use a drum machine this is hardcore punk to the core and only on occasions do the rigid drums get on your nerves (usually on the rapid rolls).
It’s heavy duty listening but I’m drawn to the message and find myself nodding with approval at its content. To escape from my escapism this collection of songs is well thought out and well delivered; ‘Ian Tomlinson’ gets your blood boiling as does a lot of the content but, with most songs checking in under two minutes, it’s to the point and on the money.
More a home project rather than a gigging live act Paul and Rob Marriott certainly know what they’re doing. Definitely flying the (black) flag for the true underground punk scene this is full of nihilism, anger and unease about how and who run our countries. Regardless of any words I can put here bands like Burnt Cross will always be out there poking the status quo and I salute them and their album: great stuff and a welcome change.
Check out ‘Too Many Graves’ and ‘They Kill Dogs’ and tell me you didn’t enjoy or think about the messages. DIY and non profit - much kudos from me. -Dom Daley

New Arrival #46
From Russian Drunk With Power Records.

SCHIZOPHASIA - 3000 Cassette. RM10 / USD3.50 (SOLD OUT)
Here is another installment from these Canadian noise merchants. This record… is fucking noisy. The songs are all basic, with “tuca-tuca” drum beats and simplistic bassy follows while a fuzzy, blown out guitar squeals some feedback and strums some rad licks over it all. The crazy noise interludes in between are interesting. Most of these tracks are really simple punk jams crammed through a Japanese noise core sieve. Yet, suddenly, when you flip to the B-side, it’s like some rudimentary industrial noise-scape -nice! The vocals are sloppy, throaty and sometimes laden with effects. There is a lot going on here, but it is completely cohesive. I wish the song had more punch to them like the first songs on both sides - they are fucking rad. This is something I wouldn’t repeatedly listen to, but I’m glad I got it for review to reinvigorate the idea that as punks we can do whatever the fuck we want with music. -MRR

UNBROKEN BONES - Demo Cassette. RM10 / USD3.50 (SOLD OUT)
More Russian HC from Drunk with Power Records! As you can expect given the band name, Unbroken Bones clearly take their main inspiration from Broken Bones… in other words, this is pretty much the perfect combination of thrash metal and Discharge-style HC. The riffs are simple and straight up, but there’s blazing lead guitar all over everything and nasty HC vocals that kind of remind me of the Accused, but not quite as over the top. Wrap everything up in a raw as fuck recording that kind of sounds like an nth-generation early 80s metal demo you got from a sketchy Euro tape trader, and you’ve got yourself quite the package. A ripping demo for the crusty metalheads, and it’s always great to hear killer HC from unusual places. -SorryState

GERM ATTAK - Fear Of The Unknown CD. RM17 / USD6
For some reason, this band has passed me by so far. Not sure why, since they’ve been around for a while, but I’ve never felt the urge pick up any of their records, despite some pretty complimentary reviews and recommendations. Sitting down now with this 14 song CD, I can see that it’s been my loss. Still, it’s never too late. You rarely see a mention of these glue-addled Canadian spiky-tops without a reference to UK82 or the VARUKERS, and those influences are definitely there, but I hear a much more straightforward punk sound too, along with the classic US and Finnish influences. There are times on this CD that I even hear elements of the OBSERVERS or RED DONS. Catchy, angry, unpretentious song played in tried-and-true style without sounding completely dated. -MRR

New Arrival #45

PROTESTANT - The Hate The Hollow CD. RM17 / USD6
The Hate The Hollow is a killer crust punk/hardcore album from a little known Milwaukee band. Protestant takes the grit and grime of early crust bands like Amebix and infuses it with the technicality and raw power of modern hardcore. The result is an intense storm of grinding riffs, raging vocals and suffocating bass lines. If Converge had pared back their more melodic moments and focused more on a DIY aesthetic, they might have sounded something like Protestant. Its not all blood and dirt here though. There are some slower tracks like “Obituary” that centers on slithering math-rock riffs before the chugging maelstrom kicks in. Moments like these add balance to the fist-clenching madness of the affair and gives Protestant some ample room to push their sound further.
Like most hardcore albums, The Hate The Hollow passes by like a flash flood, leaving you feeling abraded and disoriented in a very short period of time. It delivers intensity in spades while still balancing things out with its sophisticated compositions and doom-inspired atmosphere. For its crushing density and piercing emotions, The Hate The Hollow is one of the top hardcore albums to sneak under the radar. Keep your eyes open for these guys.

NIGHT BIRDS - Fresh Kills Vol. 1 CD. RM17 / USD6 (SOLD OUT)
Hopefully you’ve heard NIGHT BIRDS by now, as they’ve made a name for themselves over the past year with three incredible 7”s and a killer live show. In preparation for their full-length LP, “The Other Side of Darkness” due out summer 2011, we decided to give you all a little recap just in case you need to play catch-up before the LP hits. This CD compiles the first two years of the band’s existence; including their 2009 demo, the “Killer Waves” 7” on Art of the Underground, the “Self-Titled” EP on Dirtnap / Grave Mistake, and the very recently released “Midnight Movies” 7” on No Way Records. If you have yet to check out NIGHT BIRDS, then this might be a perfect starting point because you get it all at once! 15 songs in all, packaged in a concise layout with flyers, photos, and lyrics. These Jersey boys take all of the best elements from bands like ADOLESCENTS, D.I., AGENT ORANGE, and DEAD KENNEDYS (to name a few), to create some of the most infectious snotty surf-influenced hardcore punk this side of Rikk Agnew’s cat corpse. There is no doubt that the NIGHT BIRDS are going to be the soundtrack to your summer so get hip to ‘em now or pose hard later!

AGRIMONIA - Host of the Winged CD. RM20 / USD7
An intense new full length album from this dark crust band hailing from the gloomy crust punk underworld of Gothenburg, Sweden. Eight songs in just over 72 minutes(!) of death and blackmetal gloom with a healthy dose of crust punk influences. This is one of the most epic and most expressive releases to date: crushed souls, despair, and everything you’d expect from a Profane Existence title.

New Arrival #43

CARBURETOR DUNG - Inginku Rejam Raksasa Kejam CD. RM25 / USD10 (SOLD OUT)
CD version of Inginku Rejam Raksasa Kejam - Available 24th March The box includes a poster, a silkscreen patch, a vinyl sticker, a CD booklet (with lyrics both in Malay & English) and a pro-printed CD in a jewelcase (features 1 bonus song not on the 10”).
“Despite the band’s age, there’s a real immediate freshness to sound of the eight tracks here… The roughness around the edges is something bands try meticulously create now, as opposed to this, which is basically similar to the one-take near-live recordings of the early 1980s.
The music here is solidly great upbeat punk that verges into and then pulls back and forth from hardcore intensity with great dexterity. …some great very 80s early So-Cal punk style moments, where it’s undeniably aggressive but still retains threads of melody. Straight-forward yet inventive…” Maximum RocknRoll April 2012
